How to lose to weight

Consider losing your weight if you are overweight or obese for it might lead to several life threatening health complications such as hypertension (high BP), heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, osteoarthritis and so on.

Before we come to that let us first understand how and when do we gain weight. It is when we are not burning calorie as much as we are consuming it (through #food) on a daily basis i.e. it is the accumulation of this un-burnt calories in our body that make us go fat.

This means you will have to do exactly the opposite to bring down your weight – burn more calories, consume lesser calories. To burn, engage yourself in strenuous physical activities, like gymming, cycling, swimming and so on and to reduce your calorie intake, avoid sweet and oily things as much as you can. Better, get a diet chart made from a qualified nutritionist or a dietitian and follow that strictly.

Remember, it’s not going to be easy - you may feel like giving up many a times. Be focused.

What if the effort fails/ has failed

Consult a doctor and check if a surgery is the option. It can be a best bet for you, especially when:

  • Your BMI is 40 or higher

  • Your BMI is 30 to 39.9 and you have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea.

To know your BMI, divide your weight (in kgs) by height (in mtrs) squared. [BMI = weight (in kg) / {height (in mtrs) x height (in mtrs)}]

The surgery would entail reducing the size of the stomach and/or the length of the small intestine to promote lesser intake of food and absorption of calorie respectively. You might have to spend 3-4 days in hospital and then follow liquid diet for few days.
